Sports are hazardous and you want to do all things you can to be safe. Those physician bills and sitting out is not the best sense in the world. To keep safe, you need to do a merge of things: have padding, warm up, stretch, have a basketball holding net, an anti-whip net, and a break-away rim.
Padding must be paced colse to the poles, walls directly behind the hoop, and on the base of the hoop if it has bolts or the like sticking out. These pads safe you from running into them which will happen with all the performance that goes on under the hoop. I have seen it before and it is not pretty. Other things to look for regarding this is to not have any handles sticking out or lights that you could perhaps run into or hit with the basketball as shattered glass is not good.

Warming up along with stretching helps you not pull muscles and the like. Those two things are true with all sports, but are forgotten so normally before pick-up games. Population roll the ball onto the court and then they play and end up pulling their groin or spraining their ankle. Any physician will tell you how leading it is to warm up and stretch before any corporeal activity.
